Learn a little more about the author, Rachel Trautmiller
1.    Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

Growing up in Minnesota prepared me for some cold weather. And moving across the U.S. with my husband made me realize I like WARMTH. However, the Midwest has some perks. The first snow is amazing. Theres nothing like waking up to a white, sparkly blanket of it on Christmas morning. Unfortunately, my winter hobbies are nonexistent. Unless you count football. Im a Vikings fan all the way to my toes. I also enjoy writing (I know youre shocked), reading, spending time with my family and friends. And, if I wasnt such a chicken about guns, I might enjoy a career with the FBI.

2.  When and why did you start writing books?
I have always loved writing and reading. A story that sucks me into it, alongside the characters, is my all-time favorite. At age seventeen, I took my first stab at a historical fiction novel. I made it through three chapters before I realized how much research went into writing. During my early twenties I read everything I could get my hands on. And then, one day, reading wasn't enough. A set of characters emerged in my mind. They were  persistent in the need to have their story told. The product is The Bening Files.

3.    What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?
It's a dream for me, but it's hard work. I love my characters and I want other people to enjoy them as well.

4. Which one of your books or characters is your favorite?

Just as picking a favorite child is difficult, it's the same with my books. LINKED and DISCONNECT both hold a special place in my heart, for different reasons. The emotions, in between all the murder and chaos of LINKED, is sweet. Just two hearts reuniting after years of distance and misconception. DISCONNECT is explosive (no pun intended). And the characters have the type of chemistry that leaves you wondering if they will move past the suspense long enough to figure it out.

5. Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

LINKED was hard, simply because it was my first finished product, beginning to end, including edits. My first foray into the publishing world. However, DISCONNECT was difficult, even though I was continuing characters from the first book. I didn't always agree with the decisions made by my hero and heroine. It's hard to see your characters as less than perfect. And, unlike LINKED, I didn't have years to complete it. I learned how to work efficiently without compromising the story.

6. Who is your favorite author and book?

That's a hard one. There's so much talent out there. I'm going to go with Karin Slaughter. Her book UNDONE is a masterpiece.

7. What book are you reading right now?

CATCH ME by Lisa Gardner. Another great author. Next on my reading list is Valerie Comer's SECRETLY YOURS.

8. Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

I write a mix of romantic suspense, mystery and thriller. There's plenty of ugly things in the world to draw from. Our own fears is one place that's a great crockpot for ideas. Once I come up with a basic idea, I "let" my characters do the rest of the work.

9. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Watching football, spending time with my daughter and husband. In the summer, poolside barbecues with family and friends are a favorite. We're pretty low-key at my house. With a husband in the military, a toddler in the house and a full-time job on top of writing, we take our time together pretty seriously.

10. Do you have any new books in the works?

You bet. The Bening Files is far from over. Next in the series is AFTERMATH. Healing takes time. Forgives isn't always swift. Not all family hurdles are overcome. And love is an agonizing reminder of loss. Feel free to check it out on my website.

Rachel lives in sunny California with her wonderful husband, adorable daughter, two unruly dogs, and a fat cat. She’s worked in the healthcare industry for over fifteen years and has loved the written word far longer. Football is one of her passions (SKOL VIKES!) and she considers August thru February to be a sacred holiday, where football rules all. Spending time with her family, friends, reading and enjoying the outdoors are some her favorite hobbies. In the summer, you can find her by the pool, teaching her daughter to swim and enjoying her husband’s company. Rachel is currently working on books 3 and 4 of The Bening Files, set for release in late 2015 and early 2016.

Enter to Win This Inspiring Collection of Short Stories

Like its title, this collection of short stories edited by N. J. Lindquist makes for a delightful and inspiring read over a cup of hot apple cider.  Comment below to enter to win one of two sets of Hot Apple Cider and its Discussion Guide.

 Hot Apple Cider
N. J. Lindquist
Could you use a hug?

When we began to create Hot Apple Cider: Words to Stir the Heart and Warm the Soul, our task was to produce a gift book filled with stories ordinary people would enjoy reading.

Thirty writers and two editors looked at our own lives and shared our pain, our fears, and our hope. We opened up about our feelings of loneliness, times of depression, unfair treatment, and the peace we feel when we pour our hearts out to God. We shared our times of helplessness and abandonment, and our faith that God never leaves us alone. We talked about our longings and our times of loss, our feeling that no one else had ever been in our shoes, and our belief that every person matters. For example:

·         A middle-aged woman wakes up to discover her husband lying comatose beside her in the Australian outback.

·         A young doctor questions God’s will after losing his devout grandmother to breast cancer.

·         A lonely waitress stuck in a small town wonders how God could possibly use her.

·         A missionary in Africa, dedicated to serving God, has a horrific car accident that leaves him brain-damaged.

·         A shy 12-year-old girl struggles with the idea that God wants her to write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper telling people God loves them.

In every instance, these ordinary people discovered that God was waiting to dry their tears and help them see His plan for their lives, where good eventually emerged from the hurt and confusion. Every one of them learned that dependence on God creates the character and insights that produce a deep, rich faith.

When the book was finished, we hesitantly sent it out, and were delighted to discover that readers felt our simple book was actually a comforting hug.

Recently, we created a companion Discussion Guide so the book can be used for personal reflection or group exploration.

Enter to Win This Psychological Thriller Where Love Extends Beyond the Boundaries of Space and Time

Like thrillers with tinges of the supernatural? Check out Jordan's Shadow by Robin Johns Grant.

Jordan’s Shadow

Robin Johns Grant

The Crosby family has a frightening problem. Is it psychological? Supernatural? Or something entirely expected.
In 1984, seventeen-year-old Rose and her fiancĂ© discover an injured girl with no memory. The girl, Jordan, is in Rose’s life for a brief time but leaves her world shattered.
Twenty-five years later, Rose Crosby’s daughter Ginny can’t understand why her relationship with her mother has fallen apart. Ginny could swear that Rose is terrified of her lately.
Then one awful day, Ginny overhears Rose confessing that she truly is terrified of Ginny—because to her, every day Ginny grows more and more and more like Jordan, the girl who's been dead many years. In fact, she swears that somehow, Ginny is turning into Jordan.
Is Ginny’s mom insane? Is there a ghost in their house, threatening to possess Ginny? Or is the demon in Rose's past, forcing her to confront what happened on that horrible day in 1984 when Jordan was killed.
As a new girl in a small town, Ginny doesn’t have much of a support system. Her old girlfriends from Atlanta have drifted away, and the only friends she’s made are, strangely enough, guys. Alec Matthews is gorgeous, but is he really interested in Ginny’s well-being? And then there’s Max Ferguson, the recently-born-again science nerd. He’s definitely on Ginny’s side, but is he a little too strange.
Strengthened by a deepening relationship with one of these two, Ginny undertakes a mind-bending journey of discovery—discovery about faith, eternity, and love beyond the boundaries of space and time. She will put to rest a mystery that has haunted her family for two generations—if she can survive.

Robin Johns Grant published her first novel, Summer’s Winter, in 2014, and her second suspense novel, Jordan’s Shadow, has just been released. Summer's Winter won a bronze medal in the Romance-Suspense category of the International Readers' Favorite Book Awards, and Robin was named 2014 Author of the Year by the Georgia Association of College Stores. Family and friends are happy that Robin’s imagination is finally paying off. She’s always had way too much of it. She started making up stories before she could write them down (dictating them to her mother) and always had her head in the clouds. She was obsessed with books and movies like Harry Potter and Star Wars and did a lot of crazy fan stuff, which helped her dream up Jeanine and Jamie’s story for Summer's Winter. It’s a romantic suspense novel, but as John Granger (author of The Deathly Hallows Lectures) said, it’s also “a romance-thriller about fandoms…and explores the important intersection of literature, spirituality, and imagination.” As a Christian, Robin can’t help but explore spirituality in her writing, but wants to do so in a way that reflects the awe and wonder of God and eternity. With a degree in English, several non-fulfilling jobs under her belt, and a mid-life crisis coming on, Robin returned to school and earned a master's degree in library and information science. She now has her best day job ever as a college librarian, which keeps her young by allowing her to hang out with students. With her wonderful husband Dave and formerly feral felines Mini Pearl and Luna, Robin lives in Georgia.  She is also surprised to find herself part owner of a pit bull named Pete, who showed up as a starving stray puppy at her mother's house.

Shade Me from the Grey!: A Counselor's Take on the 50 Shades of Grey Movie

****DISCLAIMER for my pre-teen/teen readers. Since 50 Shades of Grey is a graphic movie, this review does contain GRAPHIC content****

For Valentine's Day weekend, I thought I'd write my counselor review of 50 Shades of Grey. Not that there's anything remotely valentine-ish or romantic about the movie, but yeah . . .

So in the interest of full disclosure I have not, (nor do I plan), to see the movie, and I've only read half of one of the four books. As a counselor, however, I have read heavily about the psychology behind why women read/watch this type of thing.

While I have not watched porn, I have read all-too-detailed accounts of porn. A few months ago as research for a book I was working on about dominance in domestically violent relationships, I created a fake account and stalked this group of "quote on quote" religious conservatives who were into wife-spanking as godly. As a stalker on their forum, I read dozens and dozens and dozens of pages of more hard-core stuff than 50 shades of Grey ever mentions interspersed with Bible verses and discussions about the Sunday Sermon. Yes, it was incredibly weird and very NOT Christlike.
But back to 50 Shades of Grey. Many people are up in arms about 50 Shades of Grey as a new thing. Honestly, the only "new" thing about the kind of lust being marketed in 50 Shades of Grey is that the target audience is women. Porn films, which target men, almost exclusively portray the type of dominant, power-hungry style sex of 50 Shades of Grey. As a Christian, I always thought I was against porn because I'm against watching people have sex. After discovering this about porn, I realized I'm actually against porn because it portrays a hideously messed-up style of sex where the goal is domination and subjection rather than love and bonding.  There are some exceptions with so-called "woman positive" porn where basically you can watch naked people be nice to each other as they do things, rather than be ugly and domineering. I'm still against women-positive porn films, though I do think they're slightly less messed up.
"But messed up is such a harsh word," you say. A lot of people are arguing that 50 Shades of Grey is just an erotic fantasy. It's not meant to be taken seriously. Lighten up.
I disagree. Ideas are dangerous. If 50 Shades of Grey was being read exclusively by 90-year-old women whose husbands have passed on, one could say "oh well, it's a fantasy. Who's it going to hurt?"
But girls and young women who are making incredibly important life decisions about who to date and marry are reading this rubbish. Heaven help the poor girl who is trying to find someone like "Christian Grey" to date. Because she will quite easily find him. And he will leave her with broken bones and a broken heart.
Ok, 50 Shades of Grey is messed up some people say, but real BDSM, which the book is based on, that's still good. "In real BDSM, adults consent to be cursed, hit, and tied down throughout the sexual experience," people argue. "Who are we to judge what people find to be a turn-on?"
I  don't believe that argument for a second. Maggie Mayhem wrote about how she has been forced to participate in many things that she did not sign off on while acting the submissive role in a BDSM fantasy. When she complained to her fellow BDSMers, they told her to stop being whiney. She should have enjoyed the rape. She said she hasn't met a single female submissive (i.e. the partner in BDSM who is getting tied up/beaten up/cursed at) who hasn't been assaulted in some way beyond what she consented to.
Where does "play rape" end and "real rape" begin? I seriously don't think there's that defining of a line. While those who play the "rape me" role in BDSM fantasies say they are doing it because it feels good, I think it's a cry for help. And a sign they really, really, really need counseling.
Well, I'll end there. For some of my readers that was probably already way too much about BDSM and porn than you ever wanted to know. For other of my readers, perhaps you're familiar with this all at a much more personal level than I. If you are, I'd say please think about what you're letting enter your mind. Establishing a culture where both genders are respected and valued is a difficult (and very fragile) thing at the best of times. Most societies have failed miserably at it. Is a few minutes of some kind of guilty pleasure really worth jeopardizing the very bulwark of male-female relations?

PS To some who are saying the reason 50 Shades of Grey is popular is because women are sick of being feminists and want men to be more leaderlike/domineering; hogwash! This kind of film would have filled theaters in a patriarchal culture like ancient Greece or modern-day Saudia Arabia. The only difference is the audience would have been exclusively male. Because after being beaten for real by their husbands every week, those oppressed women would have known better than to encourage men to be brutes. It's not because women are sick of being feminists; it's because they forgot what it was like to not be free. I guess it's kind of like the measles outbreak. Only in America where no one has lost half their offspring to preventable childhood diseases in over a century, do we think it's romantic to go to a "measles party" and spread around the germs.

Enter to Win the Preacher's Faith, a Western Romance

Excited to introduce another thrilling title by Caryl McAdoo. Read the description and ENTER TO WIN below.

The Preacher's Faith

Series: Red River Romances, Book 1, contemporary Christian romances set in Northeast Texas

Can the orphaned preacher and the heartbroken rodeo queen navigate the path to true love with a lie and an ex-beau blocking their way? Learning of Faith Johnson’s rash promise to her father, New Hope Baptist’s interim preacher Asa Davidson shows up to apply for the position—of husband. The cowgirl was only trying to give her dying father hope promising to marry the first thirty-something-year-old Christian virgin to ask. Who’d ever dream one existed in all of Texas, much less Red River County? But sure enough, one comes a’courting the very next day thanks to the Lord and Daddy’s baby sister, loud mouth Aunt Iris. Faith’s appalled, but a promise is a promise. She only needs to
figure a way out.
Originally, Asa sees matrimony as a career move. He hopes a godly, local wife will seal the deal for a permanent call. Then asked right out about that very thing, he lies. Sparks fly when her past love and the preacher meet up, but as the days pass, she finds herself admiring the man and his relationship to God more and more. He’s a hard worker and wonderful, fun companion. Maybe she could learn to love him. But what if New Hope doesn’t call him? She loves it right where she’s at. Plus what about her dying father? And there’s that untruth between them….
And to make things even harder, her ex comes to Christ through it all!

Peek Inside the Preacher's Faith: Excerpt Below
A black sedan rolled across the main entrance cattle guard. Faith sat a little taller in the saddle. Shame it wasn’t a new truck pulling a full Featherlight horse trailer, but hey, any new business would be a Godsend. Instead of coming to the barn though, the car stayed right and went up to the house. New nurse, maybe?
Whatever. The gelding needed at least another fifteen minutes. She worked him hard—several times around with a right front lead, turn around the other way on a left lead, backed him one complete lap—then took him into the wash stall. She’d never known a horse who loved baths better than the beautiful paint, and so intelligent, almost too smart for his britches. Definitely one she wouldn’t mind calling her own.
Halfway to having him brushed out, the barn’s man-door opened.
       “Miss Johnson?”
She looked over the gelding’s back. The form of a man stood in the doorway silhouetted by the late afternoon sun. Tall with broad shoulders, he filled the opening. She couldn’t see if he looked like money or not, but hey, even poor guys needed their horses trained. “Yessiree, that’d be me. How can I help you?”
       “I came about the position.”
“You’ve come to the wrong place. I’m not hiring.”
The guy stepped in and closed the door, his face still dark and undistinguishable. “That isn’t
what your aunt Iris said.”
“Bless Auntie’s heart, I don’t know what she’s thinking, but she’s just wrong. I’m not
hiring. Sorry you came all this way for nothing.”
Her eyes started adjusting, and the man, maybe a few years older than her, came into view. A sort of good-looking type in a townie kind of way, but… “Maybe you need to come tell her yourself, Miss Johnson.”
Oh no, the place was a wreck. Faith needed to get in the house and stop the old dear.
“Auntie’s here?” The perfectionist would have herself a heart attack for sure.
“Yes, ma’am. She rode out with me.” A sly grin etched the man’s face.
Dear Lord, what was going on? She didn’t have time for this. Faith grabbed another brush
and tossed it to him. “Here, make yourself useful.”
       “Sure. What do I do?”
       “Brush that side.”
She moved the soft bristles a bit faster. Why, oh why, hadn’t she taken a little time and cleaned up this morning? A mental walk-through horrified her all the more. The armload of dirty laundry on the window bench in the living room. She’d been on the way to the utility room when her daddy needed help.
She didn’t even want to think about the kitchen’s condition. And how long had it been since she swept? The dirty baseboards with webs and dog hair and who knew what else… And oh no, she left all her papers scattered all the way around her swivel rocker from looking at the bills and trying to figure out exactly how she was going to get them all paid.
Bless God! Just what she needed. Why this person brought her house-crazy-keeping aunt all the way up to Negley, especially unannounced, proved more than a little irritating. This is a test, this is only a test, she assured herself.
“Brush only in the direction his hair grows.”
       “Yes, ma’am.”
She worked down each leg to the hooves with her mind racing a minute mile for the reason her daddy’s sister might have told this fellow there was a job opening. She’d love some help if she could afford it, but… In not quite half the regular time, the gelding rested in his stall, hayed, grained, and happy.
Sliding the paint’s door closed, she practiced what she wanted to say then latched the stall and faced the intruder. “Okay look, I don’t know who you are, but hey, I’d appreciate the truth.
Why are you here? Really.”
“Sorry, ma’am.” He extended his hand. “Name’s Asa Davidson.”
Closing the couple of steps between them, she one-shaked the offering then nodded toward the door. “How is it you know Aunt Iris anyway?”
“Met her at church. I’m the new interim pastor out at New Hope Baptist.” He stepped out into the late afternoon sun. Better looking than she first thought, but dear Lord, the man really needed to get himself a pair of Wranglers and some boots. Slacks and loafers would not do, leastwise not in these parts. He stuck out like a newborn white Charolais calf.
She walked beside him toward the house. “So, exactly what is this job Auntie is talking about? Did she tell you?” She looked over and grinned. “I’m already saved, a blood-bought, Bible-thumping child of the King.”
      “That makes you a princess.”
“Yessiree, bless God. So if you’re not here to share the Good News, Pastor, what was it she told you I needed?”
       “A husband.”
She stopped in her tracks, practically paralyzed. Tried to swallow, but couldn’t. He took two steps more then turned back, smiling.
       “Did you just say husband?”
“Yes, ma’am. Miss Iris said you told your father yesterday that you’d marry if an eligible
bachelor asked you.” He shrugged. “So what do you think?”

What Others Are Saying:
Great Story! Hope there’s a sequel. I love to see the artful dodger as a part of it, maybe a reunion? And he could find his mother. Just love curling up in an afghan and cup of cappuccino and reading Caryl’s books!
--Lenda Selph, reader, New Boston, Texas

The Preacher's Faith, as with all Caryl McAdoo's novels, is full of good scriptural advice. The title is a play on words...does 'faith' refer to a personal faith or the person Faith or both? Have a read and decide for yourself. …a quick and easy read, and just right for a cold winter's day - your heart will be warmed by this delightful little story.
     -- Julia Wilson UK

This was my first book to read by Caryl McAdoo and I absolutely loved it. I will be reading more. I love the way she prays that her story gives God Glory and dedicates The Preacher’s Faith to Him and His Kingdom. You will find the two main characters, Faith and Asa, talk back and forth discussing scriptures. [It’s] a good clean book to read. I was drawn into this story right from the start. I loved this book and can’t wait for book two.
-- Elizabeth Dent, reader, Alabama

My husband and I spent the first year of our married life in Alabama on a military base. After growing up in D.C., talk about culture shock. But I loved our tiny little town and the slower pace of life. Read about A Marriage of Convenience by Debra Lynn Collins below, and ENTER TO WIN.

Enter to Win A Sea-Faring Romance By MaryLu Tyndall

I wrote throughout high school and even sent queries to publishers. But then I took a break. I didn't get serious about writing and publishing again until the Spring of 2010. That Spring, I started writing a historical Christian romance set in Ancient Rome, For Life or Until. It isn't published yet, but I learned a lot writing it. Anyway, to aid me in writing that book, I began devouring every historical inspirational romance in sight. The librarians at our Alabama military base were on a first name basis with me.
One of the authors I discovered during that time period was MaryLu Tyndall. So imagine my surprise when I met MaryLu Tyndall on an online authors' group. I'm honored to introduce MaryLu Tyndall's latest sea-faring novel, Tears of the Sea, below. You can also ENTER TO WIN the book.

Doomed by the evil warlock Forwin to wander the ancient seas as a mermaid for all eternity, Perdita longs for the release death would bring. Every ten years she has a chance to break the curse when she emerges from the sea fully human for one month. The catch? She must find a man willing to die for her.
Captain Savion Ryne wants nothing to do with beautiful women. It was one such woman whose betrayal ruined his life and his reputation. After nearly drowning in a storm at sea, he wakes on an island with visions of a dark haired mermaid pulling him from the water. When a woman similar in appearance begs for his protection, he is suspicious.
Perdita has never met anyone as honorable as Savion. Even though he shuns her every advance, she falls for him. But as the end of her time on land approaches, she faces the hardest decision of all, save Savion and remain cursed for all eternity or break the curse and watch the man she loves die.
What Others Are Saying About Tears of the Sea

I cannot recommend this spell-binding, thrilling and heart-rending story highly enough. The ripples from this tale left me truly stirred and inspired. And I found that, as in all of MaryLu’s novels, that the exquisite story-telling and the vivid, expressive descriptions throughout were simply sublime! This tempest on land, sea, and in the heart, is immersed in ingenious spiritual analogies taking this page-turning fantasy to one of perfection. Highly recommended!

Fantasy Fans Will Love Secrets of Gwenla: ENTER TO WIN

Are you a Fantasy fan? Read about Secrets of Gwenla by Laurie Penner below and ENTER TO WIN.

Secrets of Gwenla
Breaking through fear and tradition.... Dealing with corrupt officials.... struggling to understand the truth.... Julyiah must reveal the truth in time, or all will be lost!

Imagine living in two worlds at the same time—the physical one around you and another one inside you that no one else can see. Follow Julyiah as she searches for Gwenla’s Book of Secrets and goes through her process of “Understanding,” where anything can happen. In her world, some hearts dwell in cozy, peaceful places, while others are assaulted by fearsome powers.

Like their ancestors before them, Julyiah and her people remain locked away in their secret valley for 400 years, with none going in or out. Special rocks provide natural light and heat, as well as workable metals and building materials. Plenty of water allows them to grow crops and raise herds.

When Gwenla led the original group to safety 400 years ago, she also foresaw the future. Unable to safely pass on what she knew before she died, Gwenla wrote down her knowledge in riddles and hid them, so that only those who sought the truth would understand. Julyiah’s adventurous heart wants to understand Gwenla’s secrets, but when pressing to know the truth, Julyiah sees wonderful places outside the walls and hears forbidden music, disrupting her world and relationships.

In spite of several obstructions and evil forces trying to stop her, Julyiah discovers the truth and realizes she alone has the answer that will free the valley from deception. Yet her friends need urgent rescue as well. Can she accomplish both missions at the same time?

In a whirlwind of twists and turns that involve a severe time crunch, Julyiah must make connections from one end of the valley to the other, or she and those she loves will die, and the Secrets of Gwenla will remain hidden for all time.

Laurie has been writing for over 45 years, but she has spent 35 of those years perfecting her symbolic work: Secrets of Gwenla. "Symbolism is much harder than regular fiction," Laurie says, "because you have to keep all the hidden meaning straight within the context of a fantasy world, while still producing a good story." Although writing is what she enjoys most, Laurie also enjoys editing, calligraphic lettering, book cover design, logo design, photography, and photo-editing. Wanting to help other authors with their books, she started the Facebook group, Christian Writer's Resources. More of Laurie's work can be seen online at

Laurean Brooks writes inspirational romance with heart, wit, and humor. Chivalrous heroes stand by to rescue their heroines from a plethora of scrapes they manage to get themselves into. Her sassy heroines are familiar with the taste of their own shoe leather, since foot-in-mouth episodes prevail
Ms. Brooks developed a love for writing after she'd read a book report to her fifth-grade class and the teacher announced to the students, “One day Laurean will become an author.” Ms. Brooks' imagination got her into trouble that same year when she wrote an assignment on Columbus' adventures. Or should I say Columbus' “mis”adventures? Laurean's teacher demanded a Miss Mary kept a straight face when the wild natives stuffed Columbus inside a cannon then shot him back across the ocean. The class found the story hysterically funny, but Miss Mary never cracked a grin.
Laurean Brooks titles can be found on Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes & Noble.
